Jah Rastafari Is Jesus Christ - An Age Old Debate Gets Put on the Screen - A Review of One Love

By  | I recently had a chance to watch a Jamaican film called One Love. One Love is a Jamaican romance film centered around a traditional church girl played by Cherine Anderson and a Rastafarian musician played by Ky-Mani Marley. The movie is the typical story of a sweet innocent girl who is in a relationship with a guy of the same upbringing, played by Idris Elba, and they are set to get married when all of a sudden she meets a guy from the "wrong side of the tracks" or in this case, the wrong side of the religious divide. There is nothing new about this story, but what is very interesting is the role of religion in Jamaican Culture.

This movie really highlights the perceived differences between two of Jamaica's main religions, Christianity and Rastafari. Some people say that they are one in the same, but there are differences between Christianity and Rastafari. Rastafari's roots can be found in Christianity, colonial and post-emancipation resistance and Pan-Africanism. The initial spread of Rastafari really connected with poorer Jamaicans at a time when Jamaica was going through major changes. Traditionally, Rastas were seen as dirty, poor, menacing ganja smokers, but nothing could be further from the truth. And it is this impression that Cherine Anderson's father has throughout the majority of the film. He is an minister in the Anglican Church which is the major denomination of Christianity in the English speaking Caribbean. This is an age old struggle in the Caribbean.

Whether Rastafari is Jesus Christ or related to Jesus Christ is a completely different debate, but worth having. The issue over people from two different religions should date and can be happy is the cornerstone of One Love. You have the closed and traditionally Anglican Church versus the introspective way of Rastafari. This is a great film to learn more about the religious side of Jamaican culture.

As far as using this film to improve your Jamaican slang, it falls short. This film is just mediocre when it comes to hearing and learning how to speak Jamaican.

In conclusion, check out One Love if you want to learn about a fascinating side of Jamaican culture, but do not expect this film to talk your Jamaican slang to the next level.
