Comparisons of United States and African Cultures

There are many similarities and differences between the United States culture and the African culture. The idea of culture is complex because there are many variables in technology, language, masculine and feminine relational practices and beliefs, customs and traditions. One major difference between the United States culture and African culture is dealing with uncertainty in everyday life styles. The United States culture has advanced new products and entertainment that encourages people to know everything they need to know on the web. Every geographical region of the United States has benefited from technology. The culture of Africa is totally different because although there is technology, only big cities benefit from the advancement of technology. The remote towns and villages do not enjoy the benefits of technology and the resources that main cities enjoy. The advancement of technology including computers in Africa is only beneficial to those who can afford to buy them or have access to them.

Another difference between the United States culture and African culture is language use. In the United States culture, most people speak English except foreigners and Hispanics. There are lots of Spanish people in the United States culture. Immigrants from different countries speak different languages. The African culture have many different tribes with unique languages. People living in the same country may not understand each other's' language but are part of the same country although they might also have common languages such as English or French. In some areas of Africa, people within the same country have tribal sentiments against one another based on dialects resulting in denying some intermarriage. This sometimes creates conflict among the people or tribes involved.

Views of masculinity, femininity and gender are other differences between the United States culture and African culture. In most cases, the United States culture engages in short term relationships. Women find it difficult to submit to their husbands and depend more on the law to fight for their rights. Divorce is very common within the United States culture. Divorce has a negative and devastating effect on the lives of children as well as adults. Africans build life time relationships and women submit to their husbands as head of the house. The law and communities makes it difficult to get a divorce and gets more actively involved in solving marital issues. Divorce is rare and is a very difficult process in African culture. Normally when couples have problems, the tribal heads encourages the wife to be a wife and supportive communication is encouraged.

Even though both the United States and African cultures are unique, cultural patterns vary from one country to another. Africa strives in the present to find identity and space in the future and is in the journey to rebuild, reshape, and redeem its past. African cultural values influence creativity with enduring profound changes. The United States, a modern country with a creative culture, continues to influence the global economy. The United States embraces a culture of self-expression, uniqueness, and originality and has been found unlike Africa to report high comfort with uncertainty.

This essay has focused on comparing a modern creative culture, (United States) against traditional culture (Africa), with the potential for high creative output as Africans transition through dynamic changes. Furthermore, the United States is regarded as the most developed nation and despite its uniqueness, African culture is often underrepresented in cross-cultural studies.
